CURRENT PROJECTS

In Kenya, Water School works with reputable  partners  who are already addressing the needs of communities.  It is through these organizations that our program is implemented in addition to their own work.  Our partnerships in Kenya are overseen by our Country Director, Jane Otai.

Lifeskills Promoters (LISP) WASH Project

Location: Korogocho & Mathare Slums, NairobiNo. of Schools: 2
Partnership: Lifeskills Promoters (LISP)No. of Households: N/A
Year of Start: Sept 2011No. of School Children: 6000
LISP had been working in schools for over 10 years doing behavior change programs and the impact of poor sanitation and hygiene was evident in the every school. In 2011, LISP began implementing the Water School Program. Using child appropriate methodologies, the children are engaged in stimulating group discussions that bring out their knowledge and practice of sanitation and hygiene. To enhance communication with children, LISP uses puppetry, among other methods, in message delivery. Over 130 peer educators have been trained and equipped with methods to reach out to the rest of their classmates.

Menno Kids School WASH Project

Location: Mathare Slums, NairobiNo. of Schools: 1
Partnership: Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) No. of Households: 409
Year of Start: Sept 2010 No. of School Children: 552
The project was started in September 2010 after a baseline survey was completed some health gaps in the school and the community we identified. In August 2011 a second evaluation was completed to mark the end of the pilot phase, and the impact realized gave room for the continuity of the project. The enthusiasm in the pupils when they place their water bottles out in the sun shows their interest in the project. Parents confess on reduced cost of medication as one of the benefits of using SODIS as an alternative means of household water treatment at the point of use. Teachers also bear witness to reduction in diarrhea and absenteeism cases in their classes as a result of illnesses related to waterborne diseases.
